LEWISBURG, Pa - Due to rainy conditions, the women's tennis Bucknell Invitational, scheduled for Sunday afternoon, has been cancelled. The matches will not be made up.
The Bison had a successful first two days of play in the Bucknell Invitational. In singles play, Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) extended her winning streak to five games when she defeated Villanova's Jaclyn Williamson, 6-0, 6-4. Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) fell in her first round matchup to Cassnadra Strange of Marist, but would bounce back and defeat Kaitlyn Hallahan of Mount St. Mary's 3-6, 6-3, (10-4). Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale) collected two victories in the Flight B singles with wins over Loyola's Lauren Cassel and Jen Iosue of Mount St. Mary's, respectively.
JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) and Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) notched first round victories in Flight C singles, while Grossman defeated fellow Bison teammate Kelly Porter (Chappaqua, N.Y./Convent of the Sacred Heart) in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-0. In the Flight D singles, Tiffany Card (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional), Renee Clinton (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge Country), and Kirstyn Sotak (Beechwood, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) collected first round victories over their opponents.
In the Flight A doubles bracket, Bucknell earned a all Bison final, with Globerman and Varela battling Calcaterra and Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School). Globerman and Varela earned the win over their teammates, 8-4, which gives the pair their second Flight doubles title this season. In the Flight B doubles bracket, Card and Grossman fell in the quarterfinals, while Renee Weissand (Honeoye, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Sotak loss their semifinal matchup to Villanova's Daniella Phillis and Lyndsey Lostritto, 8-4.
The Bucknell women's tennis team will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 6, when they host the Bucknell Invitational at 3 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pa.
