ITHACA, N.Y. - The Bison's women's tennis team completed play at the Cornell Invite, in Ithaca, N.Y., on Sunday, Jan. 29. Senior Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Colonel Zadok Magruder) played an outstanding tournament, as she won the consolation championship in Flight A Singles, and also competed in the Flight A Doubles main-draw finals match.
Brown, in her singles championship match, defeated Jackie Couture, of Colgate, 6-0, 6-3, in the semifinals, and went on to dominate Alex Seaton, also from Colgate, 6-2, 6-1, for the championship title. Brown turned in a final tournament record of 3-1.
Partnered with freshman standout Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates), Brown lost in the doubles Flight A championship match, 8-5, to Mollie Edinson and Shayna Miller of Cornell.
"I think the pair played really well," said assistant coach Steve Monge of Brown and Gamboa. "We faced a lot of really talented players and the two just lost to a good team today."
Also playing today for the Orange and Blue was sophomore Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East), who qualified for the main draw Flight D Singles semifinals match, but fell to Eunice Chao of Army.
Bucknell's women's team will return home on Feb. 11, as it hosts Quinnipiac for the first dual match of the 2006 competitive season.
