Bucknell's Women's Tennis Team Completes First Day of Competition in 2006

ITHACA, N.Y. - Bucknell's women's tennis team completed its first day of 2006 competition at the Cornell Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y., on Friday evening, Jan. 27. Senior Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder), partnered with freshman Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School), won two matches in Flight A doubles, and will represent the Bison in the semifinals on Saturday, Jan. 28.
In order to reach the semis, the duo defeated a pair from Colgate, 8-5, and advanced to the quarterfinals, where the two were victorious against a team from Cornell, 8-5.
The pair of freshman Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and sophomore Caitlin Baffa defeated a duo from Colgate, 8-0, in their first match in Flight B Doubles, but were beaten by a pair from Cornell, 8-1, in the quarterfinals.
Sophomore Caitlin Baffa won her lone singles match of the night, in Flight D, against Alex Sinclair of Binghamton.
Senior Chelsea Mills (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) played a tight singles match against Sydney Murray of Columbia, but fell 7-6, went four points in the tiebreaker, and then 7-5 in the second game.
"Overall, for our first action in the spring, I'm pleased with the way the girls competed," said assistant coach Steve Monge. "These early season matches really let us know what we need to work on over the next few weeks in preparation for our dual match season."
The Orange and Blue will continue action on Saturday, before the tournament concludes on Sunday, Jan. 29.
