Bucknell Track & Field Produces Fantastic Finishes at National Meet

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Bucknell track and field finished its second outing at the two-day Penn State National Invite, on Saturday, Jan. 28, featuring competitive teams such as Penn State, Maryland and Syracuse. The Bison had four athletes from the men's side qualify for the IC4A Championships, while two women qualified for the ECAC's.
Freshman Kerry Boyle (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) placed first in the 500-meter dash, with a time of 1 minute, 4.26 seconds, and qualified for the IC4A's, while also placing fourth in Bucknell's all-time record book.
Junior Mark Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) and senior Kevin Brown (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) both qualified for the Championships in the 1000 and set personal records, with times of 2:28.29 and 2:28.49, finishing in 12th and 13th respectively.
Sophomore Wallace Campbell (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Acad.) also performed well enough to earn a spot at the IC4A's, in the 3000, with a career-best time of 8:21.61 (fifth overall).
For the women, junior Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area), who had previously earned a spot in the 1000 at the ECAC's, secured a spot at the Championship meet with a time of 2:12.05 in the 800 (fourth overall).
Junior Lauren Bricker (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) also earned a spot at the ECAC's with a 1000 time of 2:57.38 (seventh overall), and became the Bison's eighth-best athlete in the event.
Also performing at the national meet for the men was sophomore Brian Mooney (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili), who ran a 500 time of 1:06.50, sophomore James Redmond (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep.) ran an 800 time of 1:57.77, while junior Matt Bonelli (Califon, N.J./Pingry School) ran a personal-best time of 50.65 in the 400.
On the women's side, junior Kat Allen (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga) set a career-best time in the 500 (1:17.81, fifth overall), and became the Orange and Blue's 10th-best in the event. Junior Mariel Fink (Pennington, N.J./Hun School of Princeton) also ran hard in the 500 and clocked a time of 1:18.44 (eighth overall).
Junior pole-vaulting stand-out Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler) finished second in the event with a height of 12 feet, 3 1/2 inches.
Sophomore Offeibea Hanson-Hall (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) ran a 1000 time of 3:00.38 (12th overall), while sophomore Victoria Gilbert (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) clocked a quick 2:16.08 in the 800 (15th overall).
Freshman Kati Dempsey (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) finished ninth in the high-jump with a leap of 5-05.00, while junior Anne Doty (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) finished 15th in the triple jump, with a final mark of 36-9 3/4.
The 4x400 women's relay team finished in 19th place (3:56.22), while the men's finished in 15th (3:22.13).
"Penn State was an outstanding meet for both the men's and women's programs," said head coach Kevin Donner. "We had a lot of ECAC/IC4A qualifying marks."
The Orange and Blue will return to action on Feb. 4, at the Akron Open, in Akron, Ohio.
