LEWISUBRG, Pa. - Bucknell track and field plans to take half of its unit to University Park, Pa., for the Penn State National Invite, while the remaining athletes will stay in Lewisburg, Pa., as the Bison plan to host their fourth home meet of the season; the Bison Open. Both meets are scheduled to begin on Friday, Jan. 27, and conclude on Saturday, Jan. 28.
Both of Bucknell's squads have members who have already qualified for the Indoor ECAC/IC4A Championships. Junior Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler) has been fantastic in the pole vault and recently at last weekend's home meet, the Bucknell "Heptagonal", set a new Gerhard Fieldhouse record in the event with a leap of 13 feet 3 1/2 inches and also hit the NCAA Provisional Mark. Fellow Juniors Marjorie Grap (Van Etten, N.Y./Spencer-Van Etten) and Tyler Hoffman (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) both qualified for the Championships in the weight throw at the first meet of the season, the Bison Opener, with throws of 58-9 1/4 and 55-11, respectively. Since then, both have improved as Grap broke her own school record with a heave of 59-3 1/2, and Hoffman moved up to the third-best Bucknell thrower with a mark of 58-4.
On the track, sophomore Wallace Campbell (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Acad.) qualified for the IC4A's in the mile with a time of 4 minutes 14.16 seconds, at the "Heptagonal," while junior Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) qualified for the ECAC's in the 1000-meter run (2:57.30), also last weekend.
The men's distance medley relay team, comprised of junior Mark Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon), senior Matt Corbetta (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester), senior Kevin Brown (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and sophomore Wallace Campbell (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Acad.) won the event with a time of 10:08.91 and qualified for the IC4A Championships at the Black Squirrel Invitational, held in Kent, Ohio, on Jan. 14.
Other athletes who should make an impact for the Orange and Blue are junior Jenny Stevens (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) in distance running, senior Danielle Todman (Scotch Plains, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) and junior Catherine Trentacoste (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) in the sprinting events, while junior Nina Reinhardt (Northport, N.Y./Northport) should excel in jumps.
On the men's team, freshmen Kevin Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) and Kerry Boyle (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) should be exciting to watch in the 60 and 400, respectively, while fellow newcomer Ryan Robinson (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) will be strong in the high jump. Junior Matt Forys (Howell, N.J./Howell) will lead the Bison in the distance running events, along with Brown. Running events are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Bison Open, while competition will resume on Saturday morning at 9:15.
