LEWISBURG, Pa. - Danielle Hobson, a former NCAA qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles during an outstanding collegiate career at Rutgers, has been named assistant men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Bucknell, head coach Kevin Donner announced on Tuesday.
Hobson, who competed in the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials, will work specifically with Bucknell's sprinters and hurdlers. She will also coordinate the management of all home meets, oversee the program's community service initiatives and play a large role in recruiting.
She joins a Bucknell cross country and track and field program that has long been considered one of the best in the East. The Bison have captured four straight and seven of the last eight Patriot League women's indoor championships, as well as two straight and six of the last seven PL outdoor crowns. Since joining the Patriot League in 1990-91, Bucknell owns a total of 28 championships in men's and women's cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field.
"I am thrilled to have Danielle as part of our coaching staff," said Donner. "She has been in a very competitive environment the past two years at Army, and the enthusiasm and energy she brings to the position will be a tremendous benefit to our student-athletes."
Hobson spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Army, where she also coached the sprinters and hurdlers and helped lead the Black Knights to a pair of men's Patriot League outdoor track and field championships. She also assisted head coach Jerry Quiller in the areas of recruiting, NCAA compliance and strength and conditioning.
During a terrific four-year career at Rutgers, Hobson qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400-meter hurdles as a senior, clocking a time of 58.28 at the Big East Championships, which is the second-fastest time in Scarlet Knights history in that event. She went on to place 14th at the 2003 USATF National Championships, and a year later she earned a spot in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Calif.
While at Rutgers, Hobson also competed in the pentathlon, where she was an ECAC qualifier and Big East finalist. She was elected co-captain and named team MVP as a senior. A native of West Orange, N.J., Hobson graduated from Rutgers in 2003 with a double major in anthropology and geography.
