LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell head women's rowing coach Stephen Kish announced Wednesday the addition of 20 student-athletes who will join the Bison in the fall. The Class of 2009, which boasts impressive athletic accomplishments as well as high academic standards, comprises the largest recruiting class in the history of the Bucknell women's rowing program and features student-athletes from 12 different states and England.
The recruits fall into one of three categories: coxswains, lightweights and openweights.
Tara Hankinson, Lauren Ruddy and Jeweliet Yost comprise the first group of experienced coxswains Kish has recruited. The trio will join sophomore Coral Swartz to give the Bison a solid quartet of coxswains.
"The added depth of having four experienced coxswains will go a long way in helping us raise the competitive level of the program," stated Kish.
The lightweight recruits are Caitlin Doolin, Whittney Henry, Drew Paolucci, Renee Perry and Sarah Wohlman. All five of the rowers competed at the Junior or Scholastic National Championships this past spring. Kish expects the group to have an immediate impact on the Varsity Lightweight Eight, which is no small task considering the success the Bison lightweights have experienced over the past few years, including winning gold and silver medals at the Dad Vail Regatta and being selected to represent the program at the 2004 Henley Women's Regatta in England.
"Our lightweight program is aiming to compete with the top three crews in the country and these women are going to be part of that effort," said Kish. "They have all had a hand in the growth and competitive success of their teams which will prepare them well for rowing at a Bucknell program that is on the rise."
The openweight group of recruits is the largest, featuring 12 student-athletes. Anna Boero, Christa Budney, Lauren Comegys, Alison Cutting, Lindsey Harriss, Amanda Hoes, Page Kannor, Katherine London, Kimberly Loser, Julia Martin, Nancy Miyake and Abigail Neff comprise the openweights.
"The openweight recruits come to us with a wide variety of rowing experiences and I believe each student-athlete will be able to grow and have success within our program here at Bucknell," explained Kish. "Our openweight eight has been improving dramatically over the past three years and we will add much-needed depth with this group of recruits. These freshmen will definitely have an impact when it comes to improving on our fourth-place finish at last year's Patriot League Championships. I can't wait to have everyone on the water."
Bucknell's 20 recruits will join 28 returning rowers to form the 2005-06 Bison women's rowing squad. Christine Drasba, Courtney Luzzi, Amanda Roof and Alexis Will will comprise the senior class.
