LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the second consecutive season senior co-captain Meg Blitzer was named to the women's water polo Eastern Championships All-Tournament Team. The all-time leading scorer in Bucknell history earned a position on the second team, the same honor she was awarded as a junior, as she led the Bison to their second consecutive seventh-place finish at the event.
Blitzer scored three goals and registered four assists and four steals in Bucknell's three games last weekend at the Eastern Championships in Bloomington, Ind., during which the Bison posted a 1-2 record. Bucknell qualified for the Easterns in each of Blitzer's four years in orange and blue and its seventh-place finishes the last two years were the best in the history of the program.
The best game of the weekend for Blitzer came when the Bison defeated George Washington 10-5 to claim seventh place. The Durham, N.H., native scored two goals and dished out two assists to bring her season goal total to 66, and her assist figure to a team-high 26. The 66 goals equals a Bucknell single-season record she set in 2004, while her point total of 92 during the 2005 campaign ranks second on the Bison single-season list, just one behind Adrienne Schober's total of 93 in 2001.
Blitzer smashed the Bucknell career record for goals and points during her four-year career. She wrapped up her stellar tenure with 198 goals and 84 assists for 282 points. Entering this season Schober held the career points record with 257, while Brooke Rea owned the goals record with 161. The only career scoring record Blitzer does not have to her name is the assist mark, in which she ranks third behind Schober and classmate Cody Keffer.
In addition to her offensive prowess, Blitzer was a force defensively over the weekend with her four steals. She led the team for the second consecutive season with 60 thefts, which is the sixth-most single-season total in the seven-year history of the Bison program. Blitzer finished her career with 199 steals to top the Bucknell career chart.
Blitzer was the only Bucknell player selected to the All-Tournament teams. As a testament to her performance, she was one of just three players selected from teams that finished in the lower half of the eight-team field. First-place Michigan and runner-up Indiana dominated the teams with four selections each. Third-place Hartwick had two representatives on the first team, while fourth-place Princeton had one player selected to the first team. Harvard and Brown equaled Bucknell with one player each.
Bucknell finished its 2005 season with a 23-11 record, setting a program record for victories in a season. The previous high was an 18-win campaign in 2001.
