SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. - The Bucknell women's rowing team had a great day as it closed out its home schedule by winning all eight races it competed in Saturday on the Susquehanna River. The Bison swept all four races against Loyola and George Mason in the morning, and then won all four races they entered in the afternoon against Fordham, Temple and Lehigh.
"It was a great day for the program overall," said head coach Stephen Kish. "Sweeping all eight events felt great. More importantly, it has been a long time since we came out on top of a varsity eight from Fordham or Temple. Doing it at our last home event, and the day before our annual awards banquet made it that much better."
After winning the varsity eight with a time of 6 minutes, 56 seconds against George Mason and Loyola, Bucknell improved to 6:40.05 in defeating Temple and Fordham in the afternoon, which featured a head current, slight tailwind, smooth water and on-and-off rain. The Bison defeated second-place George Mason by eight seconds in the morning, and won by nearly five seconds over Temple later in the day. The varsity eight was made up of coxswain-Coral Swartz, 8-Danielle Monteverde, 7-Jenna Kotyk, 6-Alexis Will, 5-Laura Roberts, 4-Lauren Ewald, 3-Kara Schroepfer, 2-Lauren Olsen and 1-Erin Henry.
Bucknell's varsity four boat of coxswain-Jessica Scott, 4-Susan Shadle, 3-Cara Cox-Steiner, 2-Jennifer Prunoske and 1-Courtney Luzzi dominated the competition Saturday. In the morning, the Bison completed the 2,000-meter course in 8:15, eight seconds ahead of second-place Loyola. Susquehanna (8:45) and George Mason (8:49) rounded out the field. In the afternoon, Bucknell timed in at 8:18.88, defeating Fordham by nearly 48 seconds.
The varsity four is very determined," explained Kish. "I am very excited to see what we can accomplish in the next two weeks leading up to Dad Vails."
The Bucknell novice four and eight boats were just as successful. The novice eight of coxswain-Hope Heffner, 8-Ariel Farrar-Wellman, 7-Amanda Gallina, 6-Katherine Brewster-Duffy, 5-Jennie Trayes, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Jayne Kubat, 2-Jessica Glenn and 1-Sophie Bird edged George Mason by 12 seconds with a time of 7:24. Loyola finished third in 7:43 during the morning session. The afternoon race was closer, but the Bison still won by nearly seven seconds with a time of 7:15.46. Fordham (7:22.07) and Temple (7:34.69) rounded out the field.
"The novice eight women focused well today," commented head novice coach Katie Davis. "The second race was more challenging and they definitely responded well to a strong Fordham crew."
The novice four, which was comprised of coxswain-Antoinette Klatzky, 4-Colleen McKeown, 3-Kimin Fox, 2-Gillian Young and 1-Lauren Bolcar, had both the biggest and smallest margins of victory. Bucknell defeated Loyola in the morning with a time of 8:24, a full 31 seconds ahead of Loyola, and 33 seconds before Susquehanna. In the afternoon, Fordham kept the race close and crossed the line 2.99 seconds after the Bison's time of 8:36.10. Temple (9:15.31) rounded out the three-team race.
"The novice four did a great job of coming from behind and defeating Fordham," said assistant coach Vi Ngo. "It was a great accomplishment for them."
Bucknell did not enter a boat in the second varsity eight against Fordham, Temple and Lehigh. Fordham claimed that race making it the only one not won by the Bison all day.
Bucknell will close out its season in two weeks, May 13-14, at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa.
