WORCESTER, Mass. - The Bucknell women's rowing team finished fourth at the first-ever Patriot League women's rowing championship Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond. The Bison varsity four and second varsity eight placed third in their respective races, while the varsity eight claimed fourth. The rowers had to contend with a stiff headwind that led to slow times and a number of races being delayed.
Navy won the title by winning all three races and accumulating 30 points. Colgate (22 points), Holy Cross (17), Bucknell (15) and Lehigh (6) rounded out the five-team field. The point breakdown was 5-4-3-2-1 for the varsity four, 10-8-6-4-2 for the second varsity eight and 15-12-9-6-3 for the first varsity eight.
The varsity four opened the event up and the Bison finished third in a time of 10 minutes, 12.5 seconds. The first-place Mids crossed the line in 9:49.50, while Holy Cross took second in 10:07.9. There was a large gap between Bucknell and fourth-place Colgate (10:29.5). Lehigh was last in 10:39.0. The Bucknell varsity four was comprised of coxswain-Jessica Scott, 4-Susan Shadle, 3-Cara Cox-Steiner, 2-Jennifer Prunoske and 1-Courtney Luzzi.
The second varsity eight results mirrored the varsity four with the only exception being Holy Cross and Colgate switching places in second and fourth. Bucknell earned six points towards its team total with a third-place finish in 9:30.44. Navy won by nearly 22 seconds over the Raiders, finishing in 8:33.91. Colgate crossed the line in 8:55.34. The Crusaders were fourth in 9:46.54, while the Mountain Hawks were last in a time of 10:22.70. Coxswain-Hope Heffner, 8-Ariel Farrar-Wellman, 7-Amanda Gallina, 6-Kate Brewster-Duffy, 5-Jennie Trayes, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Jenna Kotyk, 2-Jessica Glenn and 1-Sophie Bird made up the Bison second varsity eight.
"The second varsity eight kept its determination and focus throughout what turned into a long day," praised Bucknell head novice coach Katie Davis. "After waiting on the water for almost two hours to start, they were sent back to shore because the water was too rough to race in. After a long delay, they were able to pull it back together and fight through a strong headwind. Their performance in the final was very impressive."
Bucknell entered the varsity eight race one point ahead of Holy Cross and one point behind Colgate. If the Bison could have edged out both those squads in the varsity eight they would have finished second overall. However, Bucknell finished fourth as the Crusaders timed in just over seven seconds ahead of the Bison. Bucknell finished the 2,000-meter course in 8:45.14, while Holy Cross completed it in 8:38.12. Colgate claimed second in 8:23.51. Navy completed its sweep of the three races in 8:02.08. Lehigh was last in 9:01.42. The Bucknell varsity eight consisted of coxswain-Coral Swartz, 8-Danielle Monteverde, 7-Jessica Noonan, 6-Alexis Will, 5-Laura Roberts, 4-Lauren Ewald, 3-Kara Schroepfer, 2-Lauren Olsen and 1-Meredith Henry.
In addition to the three races that contributed to the final point totals, there was a second novice eight race contested that did not factor in the standings. The Bison crew of coxswain-Antoinette Klatzky, 8-Katie Abbott, 7-Amy Van Nostrand, 6-Colleen McKeown, 5-Kelly Walker, 4-Gillian Young, 3-Kimin Fox, 2-Lauren Bolcar and 1-Jayne Kubat beat out Army for first place by one boat length in the un-timed race.
"The second novice eight had a great showing against Army," said Bucknell assistant coach Vi Ngo. "We got the early lead and kept pushing them back. The women were very happy with their race."
"The women came together very well on the race course today," commented Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish. "It was a tough day of racing, but I am very proud of our overall performance."
Bucknell will wrap up its home schedule next Saturday, April 30, with a busy day. The Bison will host George Mason and Loyola at 10 a.m. on the Susquehanna River in Shamokin Dam, Pa. Then, at 4:30 p.m., Bucknell will host Fordham, Lehigh and Temple.
