LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bison baseball team used a season-ending hot streak to secure the third and final spot in the 2005 Patriot League Tournament. Bucknell (16-25, 10-10 PL) turned it on midway through April, winning nine of its last 13 games, including a 6-2 record in its last two Patriot League series. In earning the final spot in the playoffs, the Bison get the chance to win their fourth PL title in League history, and the third in the last five years.
The Bison draw second-seeded Lehigh (25-19-1, 12-8 PL) in the first round of this weekend's Patriot League tournament. Lehigh took three of four from the Bison in the teams' meeting during the regular season. The Bison rocked the Mountain Hawks 14-1 in their only win of the series, slamming a season-high 21 hits in the contest. The winner of Saturday's elimination game will move on to play top seeded Army (35-11, 17-3 PL) in a three-game series to decide the Patriot League Tournament Champion.
Bucknell claimed the final spot in this season's PL Tournament after going .500 in league play on the year. Bucknell won at least one game in each of its five PL series. The Bison went 2-2 against Navy, 1-3 against Lehigh, 1-3 against Army, 4-0 versus Lafayette, and split 2-2 at Holy Cross. Bucknell's victory over Army is one of the Black Knight's three league losses.
Junior Matt Capece has been solid in league play, posting a team-high .388 average. Bison sophomore Matt Curry has been Bucknell's ace against league opponents, earning a 3-2 record in the PL. Curry's 1.09 ERA against PL batters is the best in the league. The sophomore has recorded five shutouts in PL play and was the first pitcher to shut out the powerful Black Knights in a league game this spring.
The game is scheduled for 12 p.m., Saturday afternoon, at Doubleday Field in West Point, N.Y. The winner of game one will take on Army later in the day, and continue the three-game series on Sunday. Sunday's doubleheader (if necessary) is slated for 12 p.m.
