BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Meg Blitzer scored two goals and had two assists as the Bucknell women's water polo team closed out its 2005 season with a 10-5 victory over George Washington to claim seventh place in the Eastern Championships Sunday morning.
The seventh-place showing in the eight-team field equals the best-ever finish at the Eastern Championships for the Bison, who wrapped up their season with a 23-11 record. The win total eclipsed set a new program record for wins in a season. By virtue of an 8-7 victory over host Indiana, Michigan earned the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.
With her two goals, Blitzer equaled her own single-season record with 66 goals. She also finished the season with a team-high 92 points to fall one short of tying Adrienne Schober's Bucknell single-season standard of 93.
Blitzer was joined in the goal column by Meagan Gins, who had three scores, Elizabeth Jensen, who also netted two, and Cody Keffer, Jessica Trimis and Jennifer Swoyer, who each registered one goal.
The Bison led just 4-3 at halftime, but outscored the Colonials 4-0 in the third quarter to take an 8-3 lead into the final seven minutes of play.
Mandy Bynum started the game in goal and made seven saves while allowing four goals in slightly more than 21 minutes of action. Katie Colgan relieved her in the fourth quarter and recorded one save in addition to letting up George Washington's final goal.
The win over the Colonials was the fifth of the season for Bucknell. The Bison did not lose to George Washington in any of their five meetings this year to improve to 11-12 all-time against the Colonials.
