WEST POINT, N.Y. - Jamie Gjurgevich hit a two-out two-run double to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Army to a 5-4 victory over Bucknell in the second game of a Patriot League softball doubleheader Saturday at the Army Softball Complex. The Bison dropped the first game to the Black Knights by an 8-1 margin.
Bucknell (5-14, 0-6 Patriot League) scored two runs in the first inning of the second game on a two-run home run by Lauren Litts and did not relinquish the lead until Gjurgevich's double. The Bison added one run in the fourth when Heather Haskin hit an RBI double to left field to score Erin Curatola. Bucknell's final run came in the top of the fifth when Lauren Wible extended her hitting streak to nine games with an RBI single to score Jennifer James. That run gave the Bison a 4-0 advantage.
Army (19-15, 7-3 PL) plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Bucknell lead to 4-3. The big blow in the inning was a two-run home run by Veronica Lauzon, her third of the season.
Julie Williams was the starting pitcher for Bucknell and pitched six innings and allowed four earned runs, one walk and struck out two, while scattering 10 hits. Five of those hits came during the sixth and seventh innings.
Lindsay March led off the seventh inning with a single down the right field line to chase Williams from the game. Christie Wiest (2-5), who was a reliever in each game of the doubleheader, entered trying to pick up the save. However, after reaching on a fielder's choice, Lindsey Gerheim ended up on third base with two out. Wiest intentionally walked Lisa Huntington, who was 4-for-6 in the doubleheader, and Lauzon back-to-back to load the bases and set up a force situation at every base. The gamble of placing the winning run on base did not pay off as Gjurgevich laced a double to center to end the game.
Jennifer James paced the Bucknell offense by reaching base three times in the nightcap. She was 1-for-2 with two runs, one walk and one hit by pitch. Curatola was the lone Bison with more than one hit as she went 2-for-3. Bucknell pounded out eight hits to score its four runs. The first two of those hits came off starter Chris Stauffer, who lasted just 2.2 innings and walked three batters. Veronica Barth (5-3) relieved the sophomore and gave up the final six hits and two runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Following a home run in the top of the first inning by Lauren Wible, who was 3-for-3 in the opener and 4-for-5 in the doubleheader, Army dominated the first game. Wible smashed her second home run of the season to left field, but then the Black Knights answered with two runs in the bottom of the first as they scored at least one run in each of the first five innings.
Lisa Vaccaro (2-5) was Bucknell's starter and picked up the loss. She allowed six hits and four runs in 2.1 innings of work. She also walked a pair of hitters. Wiest came on in relief and pitched well, but gave up five hits and four runs, three earned, while walking three and striking out two in 3.2 innings.
Outside of Wible, who had all but one of the Bison hits, Bucknell could not figure out Army starter Leigh Harrell. Harrell pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits and the one run as she improved to 6-6.
Bucknell and Army square off again Sunday in another doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at the Army Softball Complex at West Point, N.Y.
