Over 300 Attend Art Gulden Memorial Dedication Ceremony

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Over 300 alumni, family and friends attended the Art Gulden Memorial Dedication ceremony on Saturday morning at Gerhard Fieldhouse, in Lewisburg, Pa. The events were held to honor the memory of the legendary Bison coach, who passed away in May of 2001. A cast-stone monument depicting Coach Gulden was unveiled outside Gerhard Fieldhouse for the occasion.
George Buckheit '79, a member of the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame and one of the countless athletes Gulden coached in his 31 year career, represented the Bison alumni with a brief speech during the dedication. Several others spoke about Coach Gulden at a breakfast following the ceremony, including Kristen Opdyke '93, Mark Ledgerwood '01, Brian Fullem '86, current track and field associate head coach Joe Klim, and Abby Gulden, Coach Gulden's daughter as well as a Bucknell graduate. 250 Bison alumni were in attendance for the events.
Gulden had a legendary run at the helm of the Bison track and field and cross country programs including an unbelievable 405-43 career cross country dual meet record. He won an outstanding 68 conference titles and was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year a remarkable 20 times.
Gulden's men's cross country teams, arguably Bucknell's most nationally accomplished program, won 18 straight conference titles from 1975-1992. At one point, his teams posted 167-consecutive dual meet wins, a streak spanning 16 years. He sent men's teams to the NCAA Cross Country Championships nine times in the last 21 years of his career and also saw the women receive an at-large selection to the NCAA meet in 1999 for the first time in school history.
