NINETY-SIX, S.C. - Freshmen Amy Loughney and Kristen Phalen carded matching 77s to help Bucknell set a school record with a team score of 315 in the first round of the Big South Women's Golf Championship on Monday. The record total helped the Bison to a fourth-place standing with 36 holes still to play.
Phalen recorded a new career-best score, bettering her 78 at the Bucknell Fall Classic in October. Loughney had a 77 once previously, that coming in the first round of the Penn State Invitational last fall. It is the first time this season and the fourth time ever that the Bison claimed two scores in the 70s in the same round. Phalen and Loughney are tied for 12th place in the individual standings.
Bucknell's No. 3 score also came from a rookie player as Kathryn Batchelor fired an 80. Teri Schlang shot 81 and Big South All-Academic Team honoree Jaime Hays finished in 82.
Led by a 2-under-par 70 from Shelley McGraw and four scores of 75 or better, Birmingham Southern took the first-round lead with a sizzling 291. Coastal Carolina is five shots back at 296, followed by High Point at 301. Just behind Bucknell is Winthrop at 317, while Charleston Southern (331), Radford (336) and Holy Cross (373) are further back.
Three players in the field are at even par or better, including McGraw, who shot 32 on the front nine. Katy Heher of Coastal Carolina shot 71, while teammate Line Cordes carded a 72. All five Bucknell players are in the top 23.
The previous 18-hole school record was 319, set at the Rutgers Invitational on Oct. 18, 2003 and at the East Carolina Invitational on Oct. 16, 2001.
This is Bucknell's third season as a member of the Big South in the sport of women's golf. The Bison placed sixth in each of its first two Big South Championship appearances.
