Bucknell Varsity Four Defeats Colgate in Women's Rowing

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Bucknell varsity four posted the only victory of the day in four races for the Bison women's rowing team as they took on Patriot League rival Colgate and host Buffalo on the Tonawanda Creek and Erie Canal Saturday.
A beautiful day for racing greeted the rowers as sunny skies, flat water, a modest tailwind and a following current proved to be ideal conditions for the 2,000-meter course.
The varsity four, which was made up of coxswain-Jessica Scott, 4-Susan Shadle, 3-Cara Cox-Steiner, 2-Jennifer Prunoske and 1-Courtney Luzzi beat rival Colgate to the finish line by more than two seconds as it registered a time of 7:14.59. The Raiders were second in the two-team race with a clocking of 7:16.91.
The Bison did not win any other races, but did field second-place finishers in both the novice eight and lightweight eight events. Bucknell's first novice eight took second in a time of 6:45.92, while its second novice eight tallied a time of 7:10.23. Buffalo won the race in a time of 6:32.69. The Bison first novice eight, which was highlighted by coxswain-Hope Heffner, 8-Ariel Farrar-Wellman, 7-Amanda Gallina, 6-Kate Brewster-Duffy, 5-Jennie Trayes, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Jenna Kotyk, 2-Jessica Glenn and 1-Sophie Bird challenged the Bulls, but came up short in its quest for first place.
Coxswain-Antoinette Klatzky, 8-Katie Abbot, 7-Amy Van Nostrand, 6-Colleen McKeown, 5-Kelly Walker, 4-Gillian Young, 3-Kimin Fox, 2-Lauren Bolcar, 1-Jayne Kubat led the second novice eight to a third-place finish, but were less than 25 seconds behind their teammates.
The varsity eight posted Bucknell's best time of the day (6:29.33), but could not catch Colgate or Buffalo. The Raiders claimed second in the three-boat race, while the Bulls were first. Bucknell's varsity eight of challenged the two front-running boats, but came up short.
With just one more weekend before the first-ever Patriot League Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., Bucknell travels to Shelton, Conn., to take on Fairfield next Saturday. The races are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
