Bison Women's Track and Field in Third Place After Day One of ECAC Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - After day one of the ECAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday in Boston, Mass., the Bucknell women's team stands in third place with 13 points, just four points behind Liberty University in second place. Sophomores Melanie Buczko and Christa Sawko were the top performers for the Bison as Buczko won the pole vault and Sawko qualified for the tomorrow's finals of the 800-meter run.
Buczko won her first career ECAC indoor title clearing a height of 12-9 ½. Teammate Angie Hall finished sixth in the event with a mark of 12-1.50. Sawko narrowly edged her way into the 800 final, running a career-best time of 2:09.18, good for the ninth and final spot in tomorrow's nine-competitor field.
Other Bison competitors included Tolu Fayanjuola in the long jump (11th, 18-01.50), Majorie Grap in the shot put (12th, 44-02.50), Jennifer Marsh in the 1000-meter run (13th, 2:55.53), and Amy Calvo (19th, 1:16.50) and Monique Boley (20th, 1:16.72) in the 500-meters. The team of Ofeibea Hanson-Hall, Marsh, Calvo and Lauren Bricker competed in the 4x800-meter relay taking 11th place in 9:16.64.
The Bison men were also in action on Saturday, taking on competition at the IC4A Championships, also in Boston. After four events in the heptathlon, senior Mike Mellas is currently in 12th place in a 25 athlete field with 2,654 points.
Bucknell also fielded two men's relay teams with Derrin Pierret, Adam Syty, John Trotta and Mark Caroleo running the 4x800 and Wallace Campbell, Matt Bonelli, Koran Evans and Kevin Brown competing in the distance medley relay. Both teams record season-best times with the 4x800 squad finishing 16th in 7:48.35 and the DMR team clocking 10:05.35 for 12th place.
Both Bison teams will be in action again tomorrow with men's competition beginning at 10 a.m. and women's events starting at 12 p.m.
