KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Bucknell softball team lost to Wisconsin-Green Bay for the second time in a week as it dropped the first of its two games, 6-2, Friday at the Rebel Spring Games. The Bison, who evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning, gave up four runs in the bottom of the sixth to fall to 3-5 this year.
After allowing two runs in the first inning, Bucknell held the Phoenix without a run for four innings as starter Christie Wiest and reliever Lisa Vaccaro held them in check as no runners advanced past second base during those four innings.
The four innings of shutout pitching gave Lauren Wible, who is hitting a team-best .500, the chance to even the game in the top of the sixth when she belted her first home run of the season over the right-centerfield fence to tie the score at 2-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Wisconsin-Green Bay's bats heated up as the first five batters reached base, and the first four scored. Ali Rostkowski led the inning off with a single. Kate Sullivan followed with a sacrifice bunt, which Vaccaro fielded cleanly, but threw away, allowing Sullivan to reach base and Rostkowski to score the go-ahead run. The Bison had a chance to keep their deficit at just one run, but after a fielder's choice scored another run, Jenny Rayban hit a two-run double to end the scoring. Vaccaro retired the next three batters in order to end the inning.
Bucknell's first run came in the second inning when Alyssa Schneebaum belted a one-out double. Heather Haskin, who was 2-for-3 in the game, then hit a two-out single to center field for her second career run batted in.
Wiest started the game, but pitched just 2.1 innings as she gave up three hits and walked four batters. The Phoenix scored their first two runs off the freshman hurler. Vaccaro entered the game in the third inning and gave up four hits, three in the sixth inning, and four runs, all in the sixth. She struck out two, while not walking a batter.
Kristin Kosobucki went the distance for Wisconsin-Green Bay as she retired the Bison in order four times and did not face more than five batters in any inning. She allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter, while striking out seven batters in the complete game victory.
Bucknell wraps up play at the week-long Rebel Spring Games Friday evening with a game against Rider at 6 p.m.
