KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Following a day off, the Bucknell softball team had a busy day Wednesday at the Rebel Spring Games. The Bison played three games and posted a 1-2 record. Bucknell defeated Northern Colorado 10-6 in the first game of the day, but lost to Butler by 8-4 and 5-4 scores later in the day. The second Butler game was added to the schedule during the day.
Lauren Wible and Alyssa Schneebaum led the way for the Bison offense that hit .357 (30-for-84) in the three games. Wible was 9-for-10 with three doubles, five runs batted in and two runs scored in the three games. Wible is now hitting .524 to lead the team. Schneebaum was impressive at the plate as well, driving in four runs and hitting three doubles while going 4-for-8.
Heather Haskin, Kris Devore and Jill Pompeii each had three hits total in the three games, with Pompeii leading the team in runs scored from her leadoff position with four.
Freshman Christie Wiest started the first game of the day against the Bears and the second game against the Bulldogs. She threw a team-high 9.2 innings and gave up six runs, three earned, nine hits, four walks and struck out three. She did not register a decision. Lisa Vaccaro picked up the lone win of the day in relief against Northern Colorado. For the day she appeared in two games and allowed just one earned run in 4.2 innings of work.
Against Northern Colorado, Bucknell's bats came alive with the 10 runs to eclipse its season total to that point. Schneebaum and Wible led the way, combining for seven of the 12 hits for the Bison. Schneebaum was 3-for3 with a pair of doubles and four runs batted in, while Wible was 4-for-4 with one double and two runs batted in.
The Bison scored in five of the seven innings, including plating three in both the second and fifth innings. The second inning started with Lauren Litts drawing a lead-off walk. Wible then connected on her first single, which rolled through the right side of the infield past the outstretched glove of the Bears' second baseman. Erin Curatola then laid down the first of her two sacrifice bunts in the game to advance Wible and Litts to second and third, respectively. After Jennifer James picked up an RBI with a hard-hit single just past the third baseman, Michelle Danish walked. Schneebaum, who was hitting .250 for the season entering the game, came up to the plate and hit a hard double into the left field corner to drive in a pair of runs.
The three-run fifth inning, which started with the Bison leading 6-3, was similar. Bucknell got the leadoff hitter on base for the fourth time in the game when Wible singled to start the inning. Curatola laid down another sacrifice bunt before Megan Fink, who replaced James at second base, walked. Danish reached on an error to load the bases for Schneebaum. Schneebaum laced a single to right field to score two runners, while Danish advanced to third. Schneebaum, who was in the middle of first and second base, drew a throw from the pitcher, allowing Danish to scamper home when the Bears committed and error. However, Schneebaum was gunned down trying to advance to third base following the error by the third baseman.
Bucknell was tied or held a lead entering the seventh inning of both games against Butler, but came away with the loss in both. In the nightcap, the Bison led 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Julie Williams started the inning in the circle in relief of Wiest.
Maria Marchesano started the inning with an infield single, which was followed by Williams walking JoAnna Gonzalez. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Melissa Lemrick ripped a single up the middle to score both runners and win the game for the Bulldogs. The final run crossed the plate as the sky opened up dumping rain on the field.
Wible was the long Bison with more than one hit as she was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks in the game. Bucknell did register seven hits, but committed two errors. Butler matched the seven-hit figure, but did not commit a miscue.
The first game against the Bulldogs was similar in that the Bison held a 4-3 lead, but Butler scored one run in the sixth, and four in the seventh to defeat Bucknell. Each of the four runs in the seventh inning was unearned as the first two hitters reached on errors.
Bucknell jumped on top of Butler early with two runs in the first inning, but they did not hold up. Pompeii doubled to lead off the game and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Megan Fink. Kris Devore then picked up an RBI when she placed a bunt perfectly for an infield single to score Pompeii.
Bucknell, which is 3-4 this season, and 3-4 at the Rebel Spring Games, continues play Thursday against Fairleigh Dickinson (8:50 a.m.) and IUPUI (2:20 p.m.).
