LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman guard John Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday in the final weekly awards presentation of the regular season.
Griffin led all Bison players with 15 points in a 69-54 loss at first-place Holy Cross last Wednesday. In that game he made 3 of 5 shots from 3-point territory and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line. In Saturday's thrilling 60-59 home win over Colgate, Griffin scored eight points and did not commit a turnover in 17 minutes. He hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to help the Bison take a 10-point lead in the second half.
Griffin, who was also named Rookie of the Week after the first week of the year, finished the regular season averaging 7.2 points per game. He has played in every game, including six starts, and has a positive assist-to-turnover ratio (48-39). He is shooting 41.8 percent from the field, 39.2 percent from 3-point range and 84.6 percent from the free-throw line.
Bucknell finished the regular season with a 19-9 overall record, its most wins since 1992-93. At 10-4 in the Patriot League, the Bison earned the No. 2 seed at this week's Patriot League Tournament and will host first and second-round games. Bucknell will open tournament play with No. 7 Lafayette on Friday at 8 p.m.
