Bison Baseball Falls to Liberty 7-4 in Third Game of Weekend Series

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Bucknell put three runs on the board in the top of the eighth inning to tie the score at 4-4 but Liberty answered with three runs of their own to down the Bison 7-4, Sunday in Lynchburg, Va. Kyle Walter led the Bison attack with three hits, including a three-run home run in the top of the eighth.
Liberty put an early lead on the Bison plating four runners in the first three innings taking a 4-0 advantage into the top of the fourth inning. Walter doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a Ryan Gryskevicz single. Matt Belmont plated Walter with a single up-the-middle to make the score 4-1.
The Bison evened up the score in the top of the eighth when Chris Grandizio reached with a single, Chris Brannan singled up the middle and Matt Capece reached on a fielder's choice driving Grandizio into the force at third. With men on first and second, Walter smashed a three-run blast down the left field line making the score 4-4. Walter's homer was his first of the season, as well as the first round-trip by a Bison.
The Flames came back with three runs in the bottom half of the eighth when Liberty's Derek Bennion and Chad Miller scored on a error by Ryan Gryskevicz in right field. A third flame, Paul Keller, crossed the plate for the third unearned run of the inning on sacrifice bunt by Liberty's Patrick Gaillard making the score 7-4. Liberty improved to 7-1 with the win.
Marc Cussatt took the loss for the Bison throwing four complete innings. Cussatt falls to 0-1 on the season giving up one hit and three unearned runs. Nathan Mittag got the no decision after pitching four innings giving up five hits and four earned runs.
Bucknell, now 0-6 on the year, is scheduled for its first home-stand of the year next weekend when Cornell comes to Lewisburg for a four-game set on March 5-6. The doubleheaders are slated to begin at 12 p.m. on both days.
