Bucknell Men's Water Polo Announces 2005 Award Winners

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's water polo head coach John Zeigler announced several award winners for the 2005 campaign last week. The seven players who picked up citations will be honored at the team's annual banquet in May. Junior Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) took home the team's Offensive Most Valuable Player Award, seniors Trevor Mullins (Orinda, Calif./Palo Alto) and Aaron Platshon (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo School) shared the Defensive MVP honor, while Platshon and classmate Brad Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) shared the Scott Schulte Award.

Additionally, freshman Dan Schutlz (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) was tabbed the Coaches Award winner, Gabriel Heiber (Aventura, Fla./Miami Beach) was named the Rookie of the Year and sophomore Joseph Metcalf (Knoxville, Tenn./Phillips Exeter Academy) copped most improved honors.

In addition to the announcement of the award winners, Zeigler named Masterson as the team captain for the 2006 season. A newcomer to the Bison program in 2005 after transferring from UC Irvine, Masterson led the team in scoring with 70 points as he totaled a team-high 48 goals and 22 assists. He was one of three Bison to start all 32 games and ranked second on the squad with 32 steals. His 16 multiple-goal games were the best on the team as well.

After earning the Defensive MVP award last year, Mullins repeated as he shared the award with the highly decorated Platshon. Mullis, a three-year starter in goal, started every game for the second straight season and made 248 saves to fall three shy of equaling his career high from 2004. He yielded just 230 goals to post a career-best .519 save percentage. The veteran of 90 career starts, Mullins recorded at least 10 saves nine times, including a season-high 16 stops against Princeton in September. The Orinda, Calif., native finished his career with 706 saves to rank fifth in Bucknell history and compiled a .487 four-year save percentage.

Aaron Platshon was honored with shares of the Defensive MVP award and the Scott Schulte Award.

Platshon, who shared the Defensive MVP with Mullins and the Scott Schulte Award with Roslyn, posted an outstanding final season in orange and blue. He led the team with 49 steals to bring his career total to 188, which ranks third on Bucknell's career list. The second-team all-conference selection also produced on the offensive side of the pool with 22 goals, a career-high 38 assists and 60 points. His point total was second on the team and just seven shy of his career high. Platshon posted six multiple-goal games and 11 multiple-assist outings in 2005. A tri-captain along with Mullins and Roslyn in 2005, Platshon finished his career with 94 goals, 96 assists and 190 points. Just the second three-time captain in program history, Platshon joins Alex Lunding as the only two-time winners of the Schulte Award, which is given to "the individuals who contribute the most to Bucknell water polo". Platshon also earned the award in 2003.

Brad Roslyn shared the Scott Schulte Award with classmate Aaron Platshon.

Roslyn, who was honored with the Schulte Award for the first time, earned his third consecutive all-conference selection with a first-team honor this year. He tied for second on the team with 38 goals and tied for third with 59 points, while his 21 assists also ranked third on the squad. A veteran of more than 120 games, Roslyn tallied eight multiple-goal games, including five with at least three goals, in 2005. He finished his career with 176 goals, 82 assists and 258 points and fell eight goals shy of 10th place on the Bison career ledger. His 111 career steals stands sixth all-time at Bucknell.

Metcalf represented the sophomore class by earning the Most Improved Award. After appearing in just 14 games as a freshman, he saw action in 20 in 2005 and even drew his first career starting assignment. He scored five goals and dished out three assists on the season.

Schultz picked up the Coaches Award after scoring four points in nine games as a freshman. He also recorded one steal and was 2-for-4 on sprints.

Heiber earned the rookie of the year honor after appearing in all 32 games and drawing 18 starts. A strong defensive player, he drew a team-high 48 ejections and compiled 18 steals. He also scored 16 goals and totaled 21 points.

Bucknell, which faced 17 ranked opponents this year, finished with a 14-18 overall record and placed fourth at the Eastern Championship. It was the second-best mark for the Bison since the 2000 campaign.
