LEWISBURG, Pa. - No. 3 Loyola Marymount won the consolation game in the 2005 NCAA Men's Water Polo Championships over the No. 4 seed St. Francis (N.Y.), 10-6, on Sunday afternoon in Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium.
The score was tied at the end of the first quarter, 2-2, but LMU scored two goals in the second period, while holding St. Francis to none. Both of the third and fourth quarters belonged to the Lions, as they outscored the Terriers 3-2 in each.
Leading the LMU offense was Cutberto Hernandez with three goals, while Endre Rex-Kiss and Brian McShane each had two. Ben Easton, Ryan Gilmore and Scott Marshall also contributed one goal each. Defensively, the Lion's goalie, Ian Elliot, had 12 saves in the victory.
On the other end of the pool, St. Francis had only one man with multiple tallies, Milos Vuksic, who had two, while Gergely Fabian, Stephan Mudreac, Nemanja Pucarevic and Botond Szalma each added a score. The Terriers' Dusko Radovanac made a strong showing in the goal with nine saves, but did not block enough shots to lead his team to a victory.
LMU fell to No. 2 Stanford yesterday in a very tight 7-6 loss, while St. Francis lost to No. 1 USC, 14-8.
The Lions finished the 2005 season with a final record of 19-16, while the Terriers finished 20-10 overall.

St. Francis (N.Y.) Head Coach Carl Quigley
On the game... "It could have been a different game if we were more efficient on our man-advantage situations early in the game. It's a game we could have won. We wish it was closer at the end, but we showed great heart and determination."
On playing for the national championship ... "I will take out of this experience the memories that will live in the minds and hearts of our players. To play in front of all their families and friends are memories that will last a lifetime. And for our school, the same."
Loyola Marymount Head Coach John Loughran
On the game ... "Our guys came out hard and stayed intense and aggressive the whole game. Sometimes these third-place games can deteriorate into sloppy play, but there were some real nice goals scored out there today. We executed our 6-on-5 real well, which was a key."
On coming back after a tough semifinal loss to Stanford ...
"I worried about a let-down, because we really thought that we were going to win last night. But we played with a lot of poise and confidence, especially the seniors.
On the play of goalkeeper Ian Elliott (12 saves) ... "Ian was big for us. We revolve our defense around him. He made some big blocks for us at big times."
Loyola Marymount Junior Cutberto Hernandez
On the game ... "[St. Francis] played much differently than yesterday. They were awesome today. We had to answer them and make big defensive stops. Even when we would get up by three or four goals it always seemed that they would get back in it."
