LEWISBURG, Pa. - The newly completed suite overlooking Sojka Pavilion from the south end was dedicated in honor of the late George McGee, Bucknell Class of 1938, at halftime of Bucknell's victory over Cornell on Saturday.
With his beloved wife Pauline and more than 20 other family members and numerous friends in attendance, a bronze plaque was unveiled that will be permanently hung in the George V. McGee Room. The inscription on the plaque reads, "George was a loyal alumnus, dedicated Bucknell employee and a great supporter and friend of generations of Bison student-athletes."
Prior to the game Bucknell president Brian Mitchell hosted the first official reception in the McGee Room. Thanks to the efforts of President Mitchell, director of athletics and recreation John Hardt, Bucknell Hall of Famer Bob Marks `67 and Jeff Ranck of the Bison Club Board of Directors, the McGee Room project was completed in time for the bulk of the 2005-06 men's and women's basketball schedule.
"Saturday afternoon marked a special day in the brief history of Sojka Pavilion, as we were privileged to honor George McGee, one of the true friends of Bison Athletics," said Hardt. "George epitomized Bucknell's unique charm. He and Pauline befriended coaches and student-athletes across many generations, making them feel like a welcome part of the Bison family. It is fitting that the George McGee Room, a place to spread warmth and cheer to Bucknellians and their guests, will forever bear his name."
The McGee Room features a distinctively attractive décor, and will be used for Bison Club functions, to host special guests of the university, as well as for other campus gatherings. In addition, the room is equipped with a state-of-the-art electronics and video system that can be used for meeting presentations and for broadcasts of televised basketball games.
A special "open house" for all Bison Club members will be held at halftime of Wednesday night's men's basketball game against St. Joseph's.
