LEWISBURG, Pa. --On the heels of a 2-0 week that included a victory over No. 17 Syracuse at the Carrier Dome, the Bucknell men's basketball team has picked up its first Patriot League weekly award of the season. Senior guard Kevin Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) was named the Patriot League Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Bettencourt scored a game-high 20 points in Tuesday's 74-69 win over the Orange, which was Bucknell's third victory over a top-20 opponent since last January. He scored nine of his 20 points in the final 2:38 of the contest. His layup snapped a 60-60 tie, then he made 7 of 8 from the free-throw line in the final 90 seconds to ice the victory.
On Saturday, Bettencourt was again the game's high scorer with 17 points in Bucknell's 87-60 rout of Yale in the team's home opener at Sojka Pavilion. The co-captain also handed out eight assists - one shy of his career high - and did not commit a turnover. In two games last week Bettencourt had a stellar 12-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
For the week, Bettencourt averaged 18.5 points per game, 6.0 assists per game and shot 55.0 percent from the field, 53.8 percent from 3-point range and 88.9 percent from the free-throw line.
Bettencourt has been Bucknell's leading scorer in each of the last two seasons, and he has taken over the top spot again this season at 15.3 ppg.
Saturday's 17-point output moved him into 12th place on Bucknell's all-time scoring list with 1,216 points. He needs just 13 more points to catch Chris Simpson for 11th place.
Bucknell returns to the road for two tough games this week. On Wednesday the Bison (3-0) visit defending MAAC champion Niagara at 7 p.m., and on Saturday they travel to Chicago to face Big East newcomer DePaul at 2 p.m. (Eastern).
