LEWISBURG, Pa. - Aaron Platshon, a senior captain on the Bucknell men's water polo team, was named the USA Water Polo Athlete of the Week for his performance in helping the Bison post a 3-0 record last week, which included a thrilling overtime upset of 12th-ranked Princeton.
Platshon had a banner weekend as he tallied five goals, four assists and three steals as Bucknell also defeated league foes George Washington and Salem International to improve to 8-12 overall and 4-1 in CWPA Southern Division play.
The Menlo Park, Calif., native opened the weekend by scoring three goals and adding an assist as the Bison upended the Colonials, 11-3, Saturday. Platshon also added two steals in that contest.
Sunday, Bucknell, which was ranked 20th in the nation at the time, ended a 17-game losing streak to Princeton with a 12-11 overtime victory over the Tigers. Platshon registered a team-high five points on two goals and three assists. He ended up with the ball in his hands as time expired after classmate Brad Roslyn knocked a last-second pass away from the Princeton offense.
Platshon concluded the weekend with a solid game during an 8-4 win over Salem International. He did not tally a point, but drew four ejections as he came off the bench for just the third time in his career due to the game starting just 90 minutes after the Princeton game concluded.
Platshon currently leads the Bison with 19 assists this season. He stands second on the team with 34 points, which equals his total from all of 2004. The center back leads the team on the defensive end with 25 steals to bring his career total to 164, which stands fifth on Bucknell's career list. With one more theft he will tie James Miante for fourth place on the career list.
Platshon and his teammates, who moved up to 18th in this week's national rankings, are idle this weekend, but will play a rare midweek game at Princeton Tuesday, Oct. 11. That contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start at DeNunzio Pool.
