LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's golf team hosts its annual fall tournament, the 36-hole Bison Invitational, this weekend at the Bucknell Golf Course. The Orange & Blue will compete against Youngstown State, Penn, Coppin State, McDaniel College and the University of Toronto beginning Saturday afternoon.
Bucknell has fared well in this event in previous years, finishing second in 2002 and 2004 (when it was held in the spring), while averaging a third-place finish. Despite a few close calls, the Bison have never won a team tournament title in their seven-year history.
This weekend coach Kevin Jamieson will send out a pair of five-person teams, with the top group led by junior Teri Schlang (Albany, N.Y./Stratton Mountain School) and freshman Deirdre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame), who are both off to excellent starts this spring. Two weeks ago at the Princeton Invitational, Schlang posted her second-career top-10 finish (T-9th), shooting rounds of 79 and a career-low 77.
Moran's 4-over par 76, coming in only her second collegiate round, helped the Bison to a very strong eighth-place finish at Princeton. It is the team's low score of the year so far and is tied for fifth-best in program history. Moran continued her fine play at the Yale Invitational last weekend, shooting 77-82 to finish T-19th.
Also in the starting lineup this weekend will be sophomores Kathryn Batchelor (Trenton, N.J./Princeton Day School) and 2005 All-Big South honoree Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic), along with freshman Jasmine Winters (Irvine, Calif./University), who will be making her collegiate debut.
The second team will consist of juniors Stephanie Calhoun (Barrington, Ill./William Fremd), Meredith Kalman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Laura Bentzen (New Fairfield, Conn./Kent School), along with sophomores Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Kristen Phalen (Duxbury, Mass./Tabor Academy).
Bucknell this fall has matched up with only one other team in this weekend's field. The Bison finished ahead of Penn at both the Princeton and Yale tournaments. St. John's won the 2004 Bison Invitational, while Bucknell tied for fourth.
Bucknell's only individual title in program history came here in April 2002, when Jess Hetrich shot a pair of 80s to earn medalist honors and lead the Bison to a runner-up finish, just three shots behind Saint Francis (Pa.).
The teams will tee off at 1 p.m. Saturday and again Sunday at 9 a.m. Complete tournament results will be posted on BucknellBison.com at the conclusion of play each day.
