ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Brad Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./ William Penn Charter) scored his second goal of the game with one second remaining to give the Bucknell men's water polo team a tight 6-5 victory over Salem International Saturday morning in the first game of the second day of the Southern Championships at Navy's Scott Natatorium. The win advanced the Bison to the semifinals and clinched a top-four finish that guarantees them a spot in the Eastern Championships. Bucknell will face host Navy at 4:15 p.m. with the winner advancing to Sunday's championship game.
The Tigers had possession of the ball with 20 second to play and the score tied at 5-5, but Aaron Platshon (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo School) stole a pass. The senior then drew an ejection on a Salem player, giving the Bison a six-on-five opportunity. Bucknell head coach John Zeigler immediately called timeout, and on the ensuing play, Roslyn netted the game-winning goal with just one second remaining on the clock.
The Bison, who improved to 4-0 against Salem International this year, and 12-15 overall, had to come from behind for the win. They trailed 4-3 at halftime and 5-4 after three quarters of play, but outscored the Tigers 2-0 in the final period.
Roslyn, who upped his season goal total to 35, led Bucknell with two goals and a pair of assists. Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin), who leads the squad with 42 goals, found the back of the net once. Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), Platshon and Nick Ferring (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day) also scored one goal each.
Trevor Mullins (Orinda, Calif./Palo Alto), who made his 63rd consecutive start in goal, made seven saves to give him 201 this year. He has 659 for his career, good for fifth on Bucknell's all-time list.
Bucknell, which is ranked 18th in the nation, and seeded fifth in the Southern Championships, guaranteed itself a sixth straight top-four finish at the Southern Championships with the win. It will face host Navy, which is ranked 13th nationally, at 4:15 p.m. It will be the 15th ranked opponent the Bison have played this year. The Mids own a 3-0 advantage over the Bison this year.
