ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) scored a season high-tying four goals and Bucknell equaled its season high with 16 goals as it defeated Washington & Jefferson 16-1 in its first game at the men's water polo Southern Championships Friday night at Navy's Scott Natatorium.
Masterson was one of 10 Bison to score in the game that featured a 13-0 Bucknell (11-15) lead following three quarters of play. Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), Nick Ferring (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day) and Peter O'Keefe (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) each scored twice, while Sean Robinson (San Marino, Calif./San Marino), Brad Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter), Gabriel Heiber (Aventura, Fla./Miami Beach), Joseph Metcalf (Knoxville, Tenn./Phillips Exeter Academy), Josh Sunday (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Lee Anderson (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) netted one goal apiece. In addition to his one goal, Anderson posted a team-high three assists.
Bucknell's defense was strong as the Bison registered a season-high 17 steals. Heiber and Robinson each recorded a season-high four steals.
Trevor Mullins (Orinda, Calif./Palo Alto) and Lucas Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) split time in goal. Mullins played the first half and made four saves while not allowing a goal. Belenky relieved him for the second half and made a career high-tying eight saves. Washington & Jefferson (9-8) scored it lone goal of the game against Belenky in the fourth quarter.
The Bison equaled their season high in goals that they had reached twice earlier this season against both Queens and MIT at the Navy Invitational in September. They were also 4-for-4 in six-on-five opportunities.
Bucknell, which is ranked 18th in the nation, and seeded fifth in the Southern Championships, continues play at the weekend-long event Saturday morning at 9 a.m. against Salem International. The Bison will play a second game Saturday afternoon against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. The top four teams in the 11-team Southern Championships will advance to the Eastern Championships in two weeks. Bucknell, which finished fourth last year, has not placed lower than fourth since a sixth-place showing in 1999.
