LEWISBURG, Pa. - Goals by Aaron Platshon (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo), Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) and Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii//Marin) in the first overtime period staked the Bucknell men's water polo team to a three-goal lead and they held on the upset No. 12 Princeton 12-11 Sunday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium.
The victory was just the second over a ranked opponent for the Bison this year, and it ended a 17-game losing streak to the Tigers. Bucknell's last win over Princeton came at the 1998 Southern Championships. Also, since national rankings began in 2000, the Bison had never defeated a team ranked as high as 12th in the country.
Behind goals from Platshon, Roslyn and Masterson, Bucknell built its second three-goal lead of the game in the first of the two three-minute overtime periods. Platshon and Roslyn's goals both came during 6 on 5 opportunities, which the Bison converted four times in eight chances throughout the game.
However, Princeton narrowed the gap by scoring twice in the second overtime period, including drawing within 12-11 with 1:05 left on the clock. It appeared the Bison would just have to run out the clock when Princeton's Mike McKenna was ejected with 46 seconds left giving them a fresh 35-second shot clock, but Reid Joseph intercepted a Nick Ferring (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day) pass with just over 30 seconds remaining to give the Tigers one last shot. On the ensuing possession Brad Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) deflected a pass that landed in the hands of Platshon with just under 10 seconds left to seal the victory.
Bucknell built its first three-goal lead in the game by scoring five of the first six goals in the second half to take a 9-6 lead with 5:04 left in regulation. Platshon, Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), Brad Roslyn, Josh Sunday (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Ferring accounted for the five Bison goals, but Princeton answered with three goals in just over two minutes to tie the contest with 1:36 left.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the game, the Bison stormed back to score the next three goals and take their first lead as Kyle Roslyn, who finished with a team-high three goals and one assist, had a hand in all three scores.
Princeton did forge ahead on two other occasions, but could not take more than a one-goal advantage over Bucknell. In addition to the early 1-0 lead, the Tigers held 4-3 and 5-4 advantages in the second quarter. That 5-4 lead was the halftime score.
In addition to Kyle Roslyn, three other Bison posted multiple-point games, including Platshon who finished with two goals and a team-high three assists. He also added one steal. Masterson, the team's leading scorer with 27 goals and 40 points entering the game, contributed two goals and one assist, including the eventual game-winner with 14 seconds left in the first overtime period. Rechel, who finished with two steals, tallied two goals as well.
Bucknell's goalie, senior Trevor Mullins (Orinda, Calif./Palo Alto), made seven saves in net, including two in overtime. Princeton goalie Scott Syverson made five saves, including one in overtime.
The game was the second consecutive meeting between Princeton and Bucknell, a pair of top 20 teams that needed overtime to decide the winner. At last weekend's ECAC Championship the Tigers, who lead the all-time series 26-19, fought off the Bison 6-5 in sudden death overtime. Bucknell, ranked 20th in the nation, improved to 7-12 overall and 3-1 in Southern Division play, while Princeton fell to 10-3 overall and suffered its first league loss to fall to 4-1. The Bison also improved to 2-9 against ranked foes this year.
With the game against Princeton ending at close to 1:30 p.m., Bucknell has just 90 minutes of rest before its next game against Salem International at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium.
