LEWISBURG, Pa. - After helping his team to historic road victories over St. Joseph's and Pittsburgh, Bucknell sophomore center Chris McNaughton (Leutershausen, Germany/Dienzenhofer Gymnasium) on Monday was named the Patriot League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
McNaughton totaled 27 points in the two contests - 10 against St. Joseph's and 17 at Pittsburgh - and shot 68.4 percent (13-19) from the field. In Bucknell's 69-62 win over the Hawks, he made 5 of 7 field-goal attempts but perhaps made his biggest contribution at the defensive end, where he held St. Joseph's standout center Dwayne Jones to just four points and seven rebounds, well below his season average of 12.4 ppg and 12.6 rpg.
Then in Sunday's monumental upset at seventh-ranked Pittsburgh, McNaughton canned 8 of 12 shots and led the Bison with 17 points, going head-to-head with All-Big East center Chris Taft.
For the season McNaughton is averaging 13.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 59.8 percent from the floor.
Bucknell takes a 9-4 record and a six-game winning streak into Saturday's Patriot League opener against Holy Cross. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion, where admission will be free of charge. The game will also be televised to a national audience on College Sports Television (CSTV).
