LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt announced today that men's basketball coach Pat Flannery is taking a temporary leave of absence, starting with today's game. Citing a series of medical developments, including one during the Bison's Friday evening contest against Lafayette, Flannery will not be on the bench for today's game against Lehigh.
"Through all my years as a coach, I've reinforced to my players that family comes first. From that standpoint, I also realize that I must make my health a priority," Flannery said. "After taking into consideration recent events, and after talking extensively with my family and administrators, we have made the decision to take a temporary leave of absence. I know that the coaching staff will do a tremendous job in leading our student-athletes and I look forward to returning to the bench as quickly as possible."
"Pat has my full support in this personal matter," said Hardt. "Although today's game against a talented Lehigh squad is important, having Coach Flannery healthy and on the bench over the course of the season is more important for our student-athletes and basketball program. His personal health should be his No. 1 priority, and the Bucknell community will support him as he takes the necessary measures to address these matters."
Hardt said that the timing of Flannery's return to full coaching responsibilities will be decided based on his progress with his health issues, and cannot be projected at present.
The Bison bring a 13-4 record and a 10-game winning streak into the Lehigh contest. Following today's game, Bucknell embarks on a four-game road trip, beginning Friday at American.
