Five-Game Victory over Charleston Southern Gives Bucknell Volleyball Saturday Split

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Jackie Leahy belted a career-high 27 kills to lead the Bucknell volleyball team to a five-game victory over Charleston Southern on Saturday evening at the SpringHill Suites Invitational. The Bison, who dropped a 3-0 decision to James Madison earlier in the day, finished the season-opening tournament in third place with a 1-2 record.
Carolyn Dougherty finished with a career-high 20 digs in the 30-22, 16-30, 30-25, 25-30, 15-10 win over Charleston Southern. Leahy's 27-kill output topped her previous personal best of 23, set last season against Stony Brook. Leahy also finished with 11 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Freshman Jenna Henderson, who was named to the all-tournament team, had five kills and 17 digs. Amanda Grossmann and Chelsea Robertson added eight kills apiece. Jessica Le tallied a career-high 47 assists.
Victoria Owens finished with 19 kills and Canen Erdogen added 14 for CSU.
Against James Madison, Leahy finished with 12 kills and Henderson 11 to lead the Bison attack. Bucknell hit a solid .204 as a team, but that paled in comparison to the Dukes' sizzling .402 accuracy. Le had 31 assists and Dougherty finished with eight digs.
Emilee Hussack led JMU with 15 kills, while Krysta Cannon had 43 assists to lead the Dukes to a 30-22, 30-25, 30-22 decision.
"We found some real strengths, and we found some things that we need to work on," said head coach Cindy Opalski, who won her 296th career game. "I thought we showed good speed and execution against three very formidable opponents."
Bucknell returns to action next Friday and Saturday at the Morgan State Tournament in Baltimore.
