LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's cross country teams opened up their 2004 seasons at the Bison Open on Friday evening on the Bucknell University Golf Course. Other teams competing were Lock Haven, Bloomsburg and Susquehanna.
In an attempt to tune up for the upcoming season, the Bison chose to use this meet as a time-trial to see where they stand after a summer of training. Some of the top returning men and women along with a few newcomers sat out the meet in order to prepare to start their seasons next weekend.
Due to the low-key nature of the competition, both men and women ran shorter distances than they would during a regular meet. The course was cut to three miles for both races. Both races were non-scored competitions.
On the women's side, junior Julie Jakaboski led the way for the Bison with a third-place finish in a time of 18:49. Freshman Christy Totten finished second for the team and fifth overall in a time of 19:09. Lock Haven's Kat Davey won the race in 18:33.
The Bucknell women placed nine athletes in the top 15 including junior Kayla Halloran (10th, 19:39) and seniors Katie Pfeifer (11th, 19:39) and Katie Bishop (12th, 19:40).
For the men, sophomore Chris Nocera led a trio of Bison finishers placing fifth overall in 15:16 followed by sophomore Derrin Pierret in sixth place with a time of 15:18 and freshman Andrew Corral in seventh place with a time of 15:19.
Junior Kevin Brown also finished in the top 10 overall placing 10th in a time of 15:25. Ryan Blood of Lock Haven ran a time of 14:48 to win the race.
Both the men's and women's teams will be in action again next Saturday at the Detroit Mercy Invitational in Northville, Mich. Last season, the Bucknell women won the competition in Northville, while the men finished in third place overall.
