CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Six different Bison scored at least two goals and senior Elliot Benoist tallied a season-high four scores as the Bucknell men's water polo team rolled to a 21-3 victory over Queens (N.Y.) in its first game at the weekend-long ECAC Championships Friday night. The Bison, 20th in the latest national rankings, improved to 7-2 this season.
Bucknell jumped out to a 12-3 halftime lead and never looked back as it added nine more goals in the second stanza. The 21 goals were the most scored by the Bison since they registered a 21- 15 victory over George Washington in 1999. Benoist, who also contributed three assists, led the way with seven points, while Bradley Roslyn, Josh Sunday and Jay Danforth each added three goals of their own. Nick Ferring and Jason Rechel rounded out the list of multiple-goal scorers for the Bison, while Rechel set a new career high with three assists.
Sean Robinson, Paul Yerkes, Aaron Platshon and Joseph Metcalf each found the back of the net once as the Bucknell connected on 21 of their 25 shots.
Trevor Mullins started in goal for the Bison and made four saves in nearly 12 minutes of play. Freshman Lucas Belenky then took over for the remainder of the contest and made four stops of his own.
Danforth, who was 3-for-3, and Yerkes, who was 1-for-1, combined on a perfect night in the sprints for Bucknell.
The Bison continue their busy weekend at the ECAC Championships Saturday, Sept. 25, against Navy at 12:45 p.m. Bucknell will then battle host Harvard at 5:45 p.m.
