LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior driver Jay Danforth was named the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week after scoring five goals and registering five steals in helping the Bucknell men's water polo team sweep George Washington and Johns Hopkins Saturday at Kinney Natatorium.
The Los Altos, Calif., native opened the day with two goals, one assist and a season-high four steals during Bucknell's 9-3 victory over George Washington. In the nightcap, Danforth added three more goals and one more steal to his daily total as the Bison nipped Johns Hopkins 6-5 on a last-second goal from classmate Elliot Benoist.
With his outstanding weekend, Danforth sailed into a tie for the team lead with 14 goals, equaling Benoist's total. Danforth, who has 107 career goals to his credit, stands second on the team with 16 points. For his career, he has amassed 162 points.
Bucknell, which is 3-0 in the Southern Division of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA), stands at 6-2 overall and is in the midst of a five-match win streak. The 6-2 mark is the best for the Bison since they posted a 9-2 start to the 1999 campaign.
Bucknell ventures away from Kinney Natatorium this weekend, Sept. 24-26, for the ECAC Championships in Cambridge, Mass. The Bison will face Queens in their opening game Friday night at 9:15 p.m. They will then take on Navy and Harvard on Saturday afternoon.
