Bucknell Volleyball Splits Pair at Morgan State Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - After dropping its first match of the day to Princeton by a 3-1 score, the Bucknell volleyball team bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Wagner Saturday afternoon at the Morgan State Invitational.
In the opener against the Tigers, the Bison had their three-match winning streak snapped, but Courtney Clark and Amanda Grossmann still both set career highs with 12 kills.
Jackie Leahy, finished with 11 kills and Jenna Henderson 10 for the Bison, who fell 30-15, 22-30, 30-19, 31-29.
Grossmann had four of Bucknell's eight blocks in the match while Carolyn Dougherty chipped in 19 digs and Henderson 18. Jessica Le handed out 44 assists. The Bison hit well in games two and four -- .344 and .269, respectively - but inconsistently in games one and three -- .129 and .081 - and finished at .211 for the match.
Princeton, which finished the tournament with an unblemished 4-0 mark, was led by Lauren Grumen's 14 kills. Alex Brown added 13 for the Tigers, who hit .213 as a team.
Princeton hit a whopping .586 en route to the easy first-game victory, but the Bison limited them to four kills with eight errors for a -.125 percentage in evening the match in game two.
In the nightcap, Bucknell downed Wagner 30-16, 30-21, 30-21. In sweeping the Seahawks, the Bison (4-3) completed the tournament with a 3-1 record, good for second place in the five-team field.
Leahy and Le were named to the all-tournament team following play Saturday.
"We had a nice effort across the board," said Bucknell head coach Cindy Opalski. "We had a lot of people make contributions and heading into Patriot League play our strength is balance. I was pleased with our defense, especially our blocking."
The Bison spikers are in action next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17-18, as they host the Bucknell Invitational at Davis Gym. Bucknell's first match is Friday evening at 6 p.m. against Niagara. Saturday's matches include a 12 p.m. tilt with Cornell and a 4:30 p.m. contest against Duquesne.
