LEWISBURG, Pa. - Head coach Rebecca Helt and the Bucknell men's and women's tennis teams will welcome new assistant coach Stephen Monge this fall. Monge brings six years of tennis coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate level. Monge is a 1998 graduate of Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. While at Transylvania, a Division III program, Monge competed in tennis at the varsity level and was a three-year letterman. During his playing career, he was a semi-finalist in the NAIA Rolex Tournament and a finalist in the 1995 Wabash College Tournament. After graduation, Monge spent a year as an assistant coach at his alma-mater where he coached the 1999 Regional Player of the Year. Most recently, Monge had been the head men's and women's tennis coach at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. Monge arrived at Limestone in 2001. Limestone is a Division II school and a member of the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC). While at Limestone, Monge's top men's player was named the 2003 Male CVAC Tennis Player of the Year. The honor was a first for any athlete at Limestone. Monge's top men's doubles team was ranked 20th nationally and third in the Mid-Atlantic region in 2003. Prior to Limestone, Monge served as an assistant tennis professional at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center in Hilton Head, S.C. At Palmetto Dunes, a nationally-ranked resort, Monge worked with top ranked juniors and Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour players. Monge's first head-coaching position was at Hilton Head High School in Hilton Head, S.C. While at Hilton Head, he was named the 2000 Regional Coach of the Year. "I've had the privilege of working with Stephen on court for the past five summers," said Helt. "He has a great deal of knowledge and enthusiasm for the game. He has the ability to motivate players and bring their game to the next level. Stephen has outstanding experience working with quality student-athletes at the collegiate level, and I am confident that experience will benefit our student-athletes here at Bucknell. I think we'll make a great team on the court." Monge will join the Bison tennis teams whose women recorded a 16-4 record last season and a men's squad coming off a 9-11 campaign. Bucknell sponsors 26 intercollegiate sports, including 14 women, at the Division I level (I-AA in football). It is a charter member of the Patriot League and has won the league's all-sports championship in 11 of the 14 years it has been contested, including the last seven in a row. Bucknell led the nation with a 100 percent graduation rate in the most recent survey and ranks third in Division I in producing Academic All-Americans.
