LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team (20-24) may have endured a 15-for-19 losing skid that eliminated their postseason chances, but the squad won its final game in 2004 on Tuesday at Depew Field, something it could not accomplish in the NCAA Tournament-season of a year ago, besting Temple, 9-5.
Kyle Walter and Phil Bunting each went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, with Bunting collecting three RBI. Bucknell used three arms for its season finale, as Tim Peacock (2-2) earned the win with Cory Nadler and Nathan Mittag providing fine relief.
The contest was scoreless until the third inning, when Bucknell's Chris Mahony sacrifice flied to shallow right, scoring Ben Stoll. Temple tied it in the top of the fourth when Jason Connor scored from third while Justin Cooper was caught between first and second. But the Bison took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-RBI double by Phil Bunting, bouncing starter Tim Brown from the game. Brown surrendered five hits and all three runs were earned. Stoll greeted reliever Chris Hamilton with another two-RBI double, giving the Bison a 5-1 advantage. Sam Moss then doubled home Stoll for the last run of the inning and a 6-1 lead.
Temple started chipping away at the lead in the fifth, starting with a John Quigley sac fly that scored Mike Silverman. Connor then hit a three-run homer to center, bringing Temple to within 6-5. Matt Capece took advantage of a Connor error in the bottom of the inning to reach with two out, scoring Kyle Walter for a 7-5 lead.
Cory Nadler entered the game in the sixth, relieving Peacock, who had surrendered six hits and five runs, though just one was earned. Peacock also struck out two and walked three. Rob Licata entered for Temple in the sixth, and allowed a seventh-inning sac fly by Brian Hirschberg that scored Walter to put Bucknell up 8-5. Hamilton finished with 1 2/3 of an inning pitched, allowing four hits and two runs. The Bison earned their last run in the eighth when Bunting singled home Capece for a 9-5 lead. Licata finished with four hits and two runs in his three innings.
With one out in the ninth, Nathan Mittag relived Nadler, who threw 3 1/3 and gave up two hits, holding Temple scoreless. Mittag retired the only two batters he faced.
