PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The Bucknell baseball team decided to make it a doubleheader instead of a single game at Pace on Sunday. Unfortunately for the Bison (19-24), Pace handed Bucknell two losses just a day after Bucknell ended a 13-for-14 losing streak with a doubleheader sweep. Pace (10-26) won the opener, 7-4, and the second game, 10-2.
Ben Stoll and Kyle Walter both had four hits on the day for Bucknell. On the mound, the Bison used five pitchers between the two games, including Jacob Moss in both, getting no more than 4 1/3 from any single arm in the two seven-inning contests.
Bucknell took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one on an RBI-double by Kyle Walter and a two-run throwing error by Pace shortstop J.C. Pullum. But the home squad evened the contest at three with run-scoring singles from Doug Hehner in the first and Pullum in the second, plus a throwing error by Bison third baseman Matt Capece.
The Bison broke the tie with a Brian Hirschberg RBI-single in the third, only to have Pace tie it again in the fourth with a sac fly from Matt McNichol. Pace got two more in the fifth. One came on a would-be sac fly from Mike Ferrauto that turned into another baserunner with an error by Walter in centerfield. Pace went up 6-4 with another run-scoring error by Capece. The final run came in the sixth on a Rob Faist RBI-triple.
Matt Curry (0-2) started the game and went 4 1/3, allowing four hits and six runs, though just three were earned. Moss finished the contest for Bucknell, going 1 2/3 while allowing a run on two hits. For Pace, Justin Kanellis (1-1) threw a complete-game, allowing six hits and four runs and only one earned.
Pace scored six runs in the second inning to open a 6-0 advantage in game two. Five different players batted in runs in the inning, with two coming off the bat of Pullum. Ten men batted in the inning, with six reaching on hits and two more on walks. The home team added another in the fourth and one more in the fifth for an 8-0 lead. Paul Bonaros pushed the first of those two across with an RBI-single, while the eighth run of the game for Pace scored on a Steve Stutzman fielding error at third.
While Bucknell got its two runs in the top of the sixth, with Hirschberg recording a run-scoring single and Brian Day scoring on a fielder's choice by Evan Weiss, Pace held the eight-run lead with two more in its half of the inning. An error by Chris Mahony in left, just his second of the year, allowed both runs to score.
Marc Cussatt (0-1) lasted just 1 2/3 in the second game, giving up three hits and five runs with two walks. Moss threw 2 1/3, allowing for hits and two runs with one earned and four fanned batters. Luke Mara and Jon Black each threw an inning, with Mara giving up one hit and one unearned run and Black surrendering no hits but still allowing two unearned runs and two walks.
For Pace, Patrick Stanley threw a complete game, scattering eight hits and both runs. He struck out six Bison en route to his sixth win against three losses on the year.
The Bison will host Temple on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Depew Field for Bucknell's season finale.
