Curcic Wins Deciding Point in Bucknell Women's Tennis' 4-3 Win over Pittsburgh

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Nadezda Curcic rallied from a set down to defeat Annie Davies at third singles in the deciding match of the afternoon, leading Bucknell's women's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Pittsburgh on Friday. The Bison are now 14-2 and have won three straight contests, all by 4-3 margins.
Bucknell, which has a crucial Patriot League match against Army on Saturday morning, had to come from behind against the Panthers (10-5) after dropping the doubles point. But Veronica Brown, Tanya Sichko and Chelsea Mills all won in singles in straight sets to draw the Bison even, and Curcic's 11th victory in 12 dual matches this season, a 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 comeback win, clinched the verdict for the Bison.
At No. 2 singles, Brown defeated Becky Emmers 7-6, 6-0. Sichko cruised past Hayley Hughes 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4, and on court six Mills defeated Konita Jude 6-4, 6-4.
Pittsburgh's two singles points came from the first and fifth spots. At No. 1 Laura Pegula topped Rheanna Gaskin 6-3, 6-3, and at No. 5 Emily Hughes outlasted Samantha Berthod 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
The Panthers took three close doubles matches to begin the day, winning 8-5 at No. 1 and 8-6 at 2 and 3.
Curcic is the third different Bison to win the deciding point during this three-match winning streak. Brown was the hero in a 4-3 win over Villanova on Apr. 6, and Mills earned the fourth point in a key 4-3 win over Lehigh on Apr. 7.
Start time for Bucknell's match with Army is 10 a.m. The Black Knights have captured four of the last five Patriot League titles, including the 2003 championship. Army leads the Patriot League with a 3-0 record, while Bucknell is tied with Colgate for fourth place at 2-2. The top four teams qualify for the Patriot League Tournament Apr. 17-18.
