WEST POINT, N.Y. - Bucknell baseball has had mostly successful days in Patriot League play recently, rendering Friday's doubleheader an unfortunate exception. Reigning Patriot League Pitcher of the Week Matt Daley gave up his first earned runs since a start against Fordham on March 6 as Bucknell lost the opener, 6-4. Kevin Miller started the second game for Bucknell and turned in an eight-inning, three-hit performance before a ninth-inning grand slam tipped the contest in Army's favor, 6-3.
Kyle Walter led Bucknell with three hits on the day, all in the second game, and Chris Mahony was the only Bison with two RBI, both of which were recorded in the second game as well.
In the opener, Brian Day got the Bison (16-11, 6-4 PL) on the scoreboard leading off the second inning with a home run that cleared the left-center field wall, his third round-tripper of the season. But Army (21-9, 9-1 PL) answered in its next at-bat, as Nolan Cork homered just inside the left field foul pole to tie the game. Cork's hit was the first hit off Daley (6-1) in 10 innings, and the homer ended a 30-inning streak without an earned run for Daley. It also started a string of five consecutive hits that netted the Black Knights a 4-1 lead.
But Army starter Nick Hill (6-2) came under an offensive attack as well. The Bison led off the third inning with hits from Phil Bunting and Ben Stoll, and got within 4-3 when Sam Moss grounded to Scogin at shortstop, who made a poor throw and allowed both runners to score. Bucknell tied the game as catcher Schuyler Williamson threw the ball into left field trying to pick Moss off third.
After giving up three hits to start the fourth, Daley got out of the bases loaded jam with two strikeouts and a flyout, keeping the game tied. Cork struck again, however, leading the sixth with a solo home run to left, putting Army ahead 5-4. And again, Cork started a barrage of Army hits as Daley left the game with the bases loaded and none out, turning the contest over to Jacob Moss. In his five innings, Daley surrendered a career-high 11 hits. Army got just one run out of their bases-loaded situation on a double steal and made the 6-4 lead final by retiring Bucknell in order in the seventh. Hill went the complete seven, giving up just four hits.
The Bison scored first in the second game as well, when in the fourth inning Army shortstop Scogin could not field a Brian Hirschberg grounder, allowing Pete Wolf to score from second. Bucknell added two more in the sixth on a bases-loaded single from Mahony to take a 3-0 lead. Army got one back in its half of the sixth, when Walker Gorham grounded out and scored Milan Dinga from third. Miller took a no-hitter into the inning, but had it broken by Gorham with one out. Miller's counterpart, Wes Bumgardner, threw the first seven innings and allowed Bucknell five hits. Ben Mayhew (1-0) threw the final two innings for Army, giving up three hits.
After walking the first hitter of the ninth inning, Miller gave way to Jacob Moss (1-1). Army was able to score one run when Jeremy Stache scored on a throwing error by Sam Moss, prolonging the inning. The Black Knights loaded the bases without getting a hit, via a fielder's choice on the same play as the error and a third-strike wild pitch before Williamson brought them all in with a solid home run to left-center that gave Army the win.
Bucknell and Army will conclude the series Saturday with another doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
