Bison Women's Water Polo Loses 9-4 Game to Princeton

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell fell into an early 5-0 hole and could not overcome the deficit on the way to a 9-4 loss at the hands of 18th-ranked Princeton in the third game of the Eastern Championship on Saturday, April 24. The Bison, seeded eighth in the tournament and hosting the event, dropped a game to the fifth-seeded Tigers for the 13th-straight time.
Anne Olson got the scoring started at 4:58 of the first quarter when she collected a rebounded shot and scored unassisted on the putback. After a bit of back-and-forth ball, Anne-Lise Maag made it a 2-0 game when she put Jazmin Brown's pass into the back right corner with 2:58 to play in the first.
Megan Donahue continued the Princeton run into the second frame, putting a solid Bison defensive effort to waste as she converted with just seconds left on the shot clock for a 3-0 score. Donahue came back :43 later to dribble a ball across the line, despite the efforts of Bucknell goalkeeper Mandy Bynum to make the save.
With 2:35 left in the first half, the Bison suffered another blow, losing leading scorer Meg Blitzer to ejections. Princeton missed out on the man-up opportunity, but still capitalized with Karina Reyner's goal with 2:14 left in the opening 14.
Orange and Blue junior Katie Hartigan ended the Bucknell scoring drought with a sneaky lob shot over the outstretched hands of Princeton goalkeeper Madeline McCarthy just 1:06 into the third quarter to break up the shutout. Classmate Cody Keffer tallied just over a minute later, taking a pass from senior Kelly Hofstetter in an extra-man situation, to get the squad within 5-2 with 4:53 to play in the third.
But Princeton's Elyse Colgan, cousin of Bison backup goalkeeper Katie Colgan, responded with two unanswered, including a four-meter penalty shot, to push it back to a 7-2 game.
BU got that penalty shot back with Christina Behrens' four-meter goal with 3:42 left in the game that pulled the Orange and Blue within 7-3, but the Tigers again had an answer. Kathryn Parolin led the pack on a breakaway and gave Bynum no chance on a point blank shot with 3:14 to go for an 8-3 game.
Senior Daniela Faas finished the Bison scoring with her first goal of the season, and it was a pretty reverse shot on a feed from freshman Susan Kingerski. The Tigers' J.J. Ryu tacked on an insurance goal with 1:26 to play to secure the 9-4 victory.
Bynum finished the game with 13 saves, matching her season-high equaled twice before.
Bucknell falls to 15-18 overall, but are ensured at least eighth place in the championship, which will match the team's highest-ever finish. BU faces the loser of the George Washington vs. Harvard game being played right now at 11:20 a.m. tomorrow morning, playing for seventh place. Princeton advances to the fifth-place game at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow against the winner of the GW/Harvard contest.
