LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman women's water polo player Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius College Preparatory) has been named the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 18, 2004. It is the first weekly award for Jensen.
In a 2-1 week for the Bison, Jensen scored seven goals and had seven assists in helping her squad to a third-place finish at the Southern Division Championship. The bronze medal matches the team's highest-ever finish at the championship event.
In BU's only loss of the weekend, Jensen contributed one goal and three assists in a 7-6 disappointing defeat to George Washington. She also registered three steals in the contest. The rookie turned around to toss in a team-high three goals and added two assists in Bucknell's convincing 17-3 win over Maryland, while also grabbing three more steals.
In the third-place game, Jensen was a major factor in a 9-4 decision over Villanova, scoring three goals for the second-straight game and handing out two assists to lead the offense. With her two helpers in the game, Jensen set a school record for assists by a freshman with 31 on the year. The old record of 29 was set by Eileen Ketterer in 2002.
Jensen and her teammates will gear up this weekend as they host the Eastern Championship for the first time in program history. Kinney Natatorium will be the site of 12 women's water polo teams vying for a chance to advance to the NCAA Tournament, and the Bison will kick off the championship event with their 1:10 p.m. game against ninth-seed Wagner on Friday, April 23. The Orange and Blue are the eighth-seed, their highest in four years of competing in the tournament.
