NEWARK, Del. - Sophomore Lauren Wible went 3-for-4 in Bucknell softball's season-opener, but the Bison fell at Delaware, 6-2, on Saturday, March 6, 2004. BU and the Blue Hens started the second game of the doubleheader, but it was called in the third inning due to darkness.
Bucknell got on the board early, plating a run in the top of the first. Wible delivered a two-out single with runners on first and second, scoring freshman Meghan Feller, who had reached base on a fielding error.
The Bison held a 2-1 lead after tallying again in the third. Feller reached base again on a one-out single to the pitcher, and junior Angela Stackhouse followed with her first hit of the season to advance the runners. Freshman Lauren Litts attempted to move the runners up with a bunt, and the Delaware catcher overthrew the ball, allowing Feller to cross the plate for the second time.
The Blue Hens finally got to BU pitcher Kelli Haskins, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Delaware pounded out four hits in the frame, and took advantage of a Bucknell error to take a 5-2 lead. The host team tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth for the final score.
Bucknell outhit Delaware, 9-7. Haskins went 5.1 innings, giving up seven hits and four earned runs with two strikeouts. Freshman Lisa Vaccaro pitched the final two outs of the game for BU, striking out the only batter she faced.
The Bison are 0-1 and will head to Orlando, Fla. for the Rebel Spring Games March 15-20. Bucknell's first game is against Vermont at 8:50 a.m. on Monday, March 15.
