JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. - Celine Herbin continued the fine start to her spring season by shooting a three-over-par 75 on Saturday, helping Bucknell finish ahead of half the field in the first round of the William & Mary Invitational.
The Bison shot 323 Saturday and are in 12th place in a field of 23, 16 strokes behind leader Yale.
Herbin, who won the Georgetown Invitational last weekend, received excellent support on Saturday, as Meredith Kalman shot 81, Teri Schlang 83 and Jaime Hays 84. Bucknell's team total of 323 was four shots shy of the school record.
Herbin finds herself in a tie for fifth place individually, just two shots behind leader Cindy Shin of Yale, who shot 73. Herbin's back-nine 35 was tied for lowest in the field. Ann Schnell of William & Mary, Sara Ann Palmer of Ohio and Diana Meza of James Madison all shot 74, while William & Mary's Lindsey Wagner and Marshall's Amber Churchill tied Herbin with 75s.
Yale's 307 team composite was good for the first-round lead, one stroke better than host William & Mary. James Madison (310), Princeton (311), Ohio (312), Longwood (314), Western Michigan (315), Elon (316), Marshall (318) and Methodist (320) round out a crowded top 10. Ball State (322) was the only other team to score better than Bucknell on Saturday.
Lurking just one shot behind the Bison are Saint Francis (Pa.) and Toledo.
Bucknell returns to the Ford's Colony Marsh Hawk Course at 8:30 a.m. Sunday for the tournament's final round.
