SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. - Bucknell's women's crew got back into action for the spring season, hosting George Mason and Army on Saturday, March 27, on the Susquehanna River. The Bison kicked the season off with a bang, winning three of the four events competed.
BU's second novice eight was the only boat not to place first, and the crew narrowly missed the gold in a two second loss to George Mason. Coxswain Kim Salamone, stroke-Marianne Prabhu, 7-Rachel Goldstein, 6-Susan Shadle, 5-Meredith Henry, 4-Megan Chapin, 3-Caitlin Feigenbaum, 2-Courtney Luzzi and bow-Ashley Kalinske crossed the finish line in 7:35, just two seconds behind the Patriots winning time of 7:33. Army rounded out the race with a time of 7:55.
The Bison first novice eight left no doubt about their victory, coming in a full 18 seconds ahead of George Mason's second-place crew. That boat consisted of coxswain-Julia Keyser, stroke-Lauren Olsen, 7-Jessica Noonan, 6-Christine Drasba, 5-Tabitha Smith, 4-Jenna Goldstein, 3-Kathryn Wood, 2-Danielle Monteverde and bow-Laura Roberts.
In the varsity eight competition, stroke Rebecca Newman highlighted a 12-second win over the Patriots in the second varsity eight boat, making her return to the water after missing the past month due to surgery.
The Orange and Blue sent the first varsity eight out in the final race, and the crew returned with another win, this time beating Army's 7:26 and George Mason's 6:43 with a gold medal row of 6:37. The race was tight from start to finish with Bucknell and George Mason neck-in-neck for nearly 90 percent of it. The Bison made a surge in the last 100 meters to pull away for the victory.
"This was a great day for the Bucknell crew program," commented head coach Steve Kish. "We rebounded nicely from our losses to George Mason this past fall, and now the team is looking forward to getting back in the water next weekend to compete against Delaware."
The Bison host Delaware on Saturday, April 3, before remaining at home to host Temple on Saturday, April 10.
