ORLANDO, Fla. - Bucknell surrendered four runs in the bottom of the first inning, and a late rally was not enough as the squad dropped its second one-run game of the day, losing 4-3 to Fairfield at the Rebel Spring Games on Thursday, March 18.
Bison pitcher Julie Williams struggled to get out of the first frame, giving up five hits and all four runs in just two thirds of an inning. Freshman Lisa Vacarro came in in relief and held the Stags off the scoreboard, while allowing just three hits in 6.1 innings of action. The rookie struck out five and walked just one.
The Orange and Blue were in a 4-0 hole until their half of the sixth when sophomore Lauren Wible delivered a timely two-out single down the rightfield line to score senior Kristen Potts, who had reached on a double and stole third.
Bucknell used its last inning to again create some excitement. Senior Jenna Fitch collected her second hit of the game with a one-out single down the rightfield line. One-out later, junior Jill Pompeii had her hit fall in to reach first, and freshman Meghan Feller, pinch-running for Fitch, advanced to second.
Sophomore Ashley Sarnecky stepped in and made the first hit of her career a good one, sending a triple to the right centerfield fence to get the Bison within 4-3. Potts nearly made it a tie ball game, but her shot down the leftfield line just bounced foul. Fairfield pitcher Tara Hansen got Potts to ground out to shortstop to end the game.
Bucknell falls to 2-3 overall. The Orange and Blue play again Friday, March 19, against Colorado State at 12:30 p.m.
