Bucknell Men's and Women's Tennis Sweep Fairfield

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Bucknell men's and women's tennis teams both took dual match wins from Fairfield on Sunday afternoon to begin their Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla., on a victorious note. Bucknell's women won all three doubles matches and five of six singles contests on their way to a 6-1 triumph, while the men took two of three in doubles and four of six in singles, winning 5-2.
Bucknell's women ran their dual match record to 2-0 in the spring and 5-0 overall. Veronica Brown and Tanya Sichko knocked off Diana Webb and Erin Reeves, 9-7 at number one doubles, while Samantha Berthod and Rheanna Gaskin beat Taylor Barvoets and Andrea Suriano, 8-4 on court two. Nadezda Curcic and Chelsea Mills beat Ann Mullowney and Megan Stauffer, 8-3 at third doubles to complete the sweep.
In singles, Brown led Webb 2-0 in set two after winning the first stanza 6-1 when Webb retired. At second singles, Gaskin fell to Barvoets, 6-3, 7-5, while Curcic beat Suraino, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at third singles and Sichko beat Reeves, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 on court four. Berthod defeated Stauffer, 6-2, 6-2 at fifth singles while Mills beat Tiffany Marsocci, 6-0, 6-3 on court six.
On the men's side, the Stags took both first doubles and first singles. Nick Denefrio and Matt Pikus lost to Colin Torrance and Stephen Kouri , 8-3, at first singles. Bucknell claimed the doubles point, though, when Asher Salam and Joe Menezes beat Jonathan Fernando and Kevin Nyarady, 9-7 on court two and Aaron Saperstein and Gerald DiChiara beat Zachary Morrison and Michael Theile, 8-4 at third doubles. The dual match win ran Bucknell's overall record to 4-3 and spring record to 1-2.
Denefrio was defeated at first singles, 6-3, 6-1 by Fernando, while Salam knocked off Kouri, 7-6(6), 6-1 at second singles and DiChiara beat Torrance, 6-4, 7-6(5) at third singles. Matt Pikus fell at fourth singles to Nyarady, 7-6(4), 3-6, 3-1 in the third set when Pikus retired. Bucknell responded with wins on the final two courts, as Menezes beat Morrison at fifth, 6-3, 6-1, and Saperstein beat Paul Goldbeck, 6-1, 7-6(4).
The starts of both matches were pushed back to 4 p.m. from their original 12 p.m. times. The men's team plays Franklin & Marshall on Monday at noon, while the women face Stetson at 2 p.m.
