LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lindsey Welch scored four goals to lead Virginia Tech past Bucknell 13-7 in a non-league women's lacrosse game Thursday at Graham Field. Amy Hasler scored three goals for the Bison, who lost for the first time in three outings this season.
Kate Threadgold scored twice on free position shots in a 44-second span in the opening three minutes of the game to stake the Hokies (1-1) to a quick 2-0 lead. After Katie Edge got Bucknell on the board, Welch scored three times in a 4-0 run to give Virginia Tech a 6-1 cushion. Stephanie Jones and Welch scored 10 seconds apart to end the surge.
Bucknell got right back into it with three straight tallies from Hasler, Amy Lee and Edge, the last coming at the 7:37 mark. But Kristin Loughlin and Kelsey Mays struck 19 seconds apart in the final 90 seconds to give the Hokies an 8-4 halftime lead.
Bucknell still trailed by four at 10-6 on Meredith Wright's goal with 14:00 left, but Jones and Threadgold scored 47 seconds apart to restore the Hokies' six-goal margin before Hasler and Jones swapped goals in the final two minutes.
Both teams benefited from some outstanding goaltending. Bucknell's Lizzie McDaniel stopped a career-high 18 shots, while Virginia Tech's Jamie McGraw made 10 saves. Both keepers made several point-blank stops.
Virginia Tech controlled most of the key draws and finished with a 12-10 advantage. The Hokies outshot Bucknell 38-27.
Threadgold and Jones finished with three goals apiece, while Mays had two and Lindsey Pieper logged two assists. Edge continued her fine start to her rookie season with two more goals, giving her a team-high 10 on the season.
Bucknell hosts American on Saturday at noon in a rematch of last year's Patriot League championship game. It will be the league opener for both squads. Virginia Tech visits Lafayette at 1 p.m. Saturday.
